We are in the process of making a move from WA to the Gold Coast and was wondering if anyone could give any insight into Varsity College (both primary and senior school). Is it true that it is one of the best state schools in the area? And are there any bullying problems there? Ta

Thank you so much for the insight Avril, it is much appreciated!
I have decided that this is definitely the school I want my kids to attend. So I will just have to make sure we secure a property within the catchment :)
Thanking you again!!

Varsity College is regarded highly but is a zoned school. (See website for zone maps.)

The middle/senior campus has a large number of students and breaks and starting and finishing times are staggered to cope with the number of students. The facilities are new but the physical size of the grounds is very small. It has a small central cemented quadrangle with two-storey buildings all around and not much greenery or sense of space. There is an oval across a road which is great for boys to run around and let off steam! The library is small and basic but the sports hall/gymnasium, design technology workshop, computer rooms, dance studio and theatre are good.

The middle school approach means that students (Year 7 - 9) have core subjects with the one teacher. This enables students to spend time with each other and, hopefully, make solid friendships. Be aware that a new student will come into groups that have been together from Varsity primary. However, there are always new students because of the nature of the Gold Coast! (The primary campus is separate and located down the road.)

It is often been said here on the GC that Varsity College is like a private school. There does seem to be a good work ethic amongst the students, teachers have high expectations and admin jump on any problems. As for bullying, there is bullying in any school - overt or sly.

Hope this gives you a bit more information.

Of the Public schools in the area, Newbridge Heights has an excellent reputation. Holsworthy has a very good Kindergarten program. Both Wattle Grove and Hammondville are very good schools too.
