can anyone help me out i have an autistic child in prep. school is only entitling my child to 2 hours of school a day as that is as long as a helper can be in class with her. how do i get her more help and support that she needs?

Mainstreaming should not just be a politically correct way to save money. Children need time, specialised caring staff and a safe environment. Special classes only work if suitable children are placed together. Often they have a bad press because they get a hotch-potch of different kids with a huge range of strengths and weaknesses. I taught a class with a severely affected girl with cerebral palsy who could not move at all. She was at the mercy of an incredibly strong chap with a negligible IQ. Even though there were only 6 children in the class I could not teach the more able students because i was fearing for the life of this poor young girl. He would through desks, chairs and computers at anyone with in reach. The aide often had to take students out for toileting, so I was alone. Properly organised special classes can be a real boon for young people with additional needs.

My son has ASD and ADHD and think they do an awesome job, but they still need so much more time in the SEU to do do alot better.

I have 3 kids with aspergers and Id love to thank the SEU teachers for the wonderful work they do. Please be aware that the QLD ststae govt has once again cut funding to our SEU's state wide. please send a letter of complaint about this to your local member of parilment. we need to fight for our kids to get a fair go.

Hi Nicole,my daughter is also an ASD with mild intellecetual impairment and speech delay. I sure as you probablay already know if they want to be understood they make their feelings pretty clear. I know it's heartbreaking but the more they can be socially integrated I believe the easier their futures will be. Just remember that it really does hurt us probably more that is does them. Keep smiling. School is good.

Hi, my son is being intergrated into mainstream this year in yr3. This morning, I think it was a bit over whelming for him. he was crying because he was confused. He suffers from Aspergers with sever language delay. I am stressing a bit. I really hope he is going to be ok today.

Of the Public schools in the area, Newbridge Heights has an excellent reputation. Holsworthy has a very good Kindergarten program. Both Wattle Grove and Hammondville are very good schools too.
