Our bike policy used to be non-existent ie.it was a one liner that stated that no bikes were to be ridden to school. Over the last eight years there has been a concerted effort to change the attitude towards bike riding to the point where it has become the norm for students to use active travel to come to school, and the whole school community has embraced this concept. Parents also introduced the Walking School Bus, and this has complemented our efforts to encourage students to use active travel. We have an Active Travel Committee comprising senior students, and they help organise events and promote active travel. We believe this is all very important as we want to combat the car culture, encourage students to be fit, healthy and self reliant, and help preserve the environment.
Dropping the kids off at our school is a traffic nightmare... if you're doing it by car. On the bike it's a breeze. Our suburb has lots of bike trails and two major trails intersect at the school's rear entrance. The school has a strong bike culture simply because it's easier to ride than it is to drive. There's a lesson for developers there. My 6 year old rides her bike alongside my son and I on our bike. It is always a pleasure to ride to school and often we'll take the long way home, visit the local shops, stop off at a friend's house or on Mondays, drop off my 4 year old at pre-school.
