When the school fails and the student has to suffer!

I am here to voice my opinion and let you all know that I am very disappointed in the education system.

My son is in grade 5, I spoke with his teacher today and she has informed me that he is failing quite badly and is no where near up to grade 5 capabilities. I asked her if he will be getting any learning support and thats when I found out that they dont get learning support in grade 5 only in yrs 3-4.

How is it that a child can pass through grades with out being recognised as needing learing support. Is he now to go on through school struggling and then when he has had enough of not being able to keep up quits and becomes a 16 yr old unemployed male that can bearly read and write???????

Why did he not get any support while in yrs 3 and 4? Did I mention that I have been asking his teachers for him to get help....I will admit that we moved last year in May but that should have no effect as it all should of been in his school file about his progess.
He cant tell that times tables he cant spell very well only the basics, he cant read the time and struggles with maths. His sister who is in yr 4 lends him a hand with his home work!!!

And now he is gettin in trouble in class and he is starting to miss behave, and wat can I do about that? To be honest if I was struggling so hard and falling behind everyone else I wouldnt want to do any work either.
Is there any way I can make the school get him the help he needs. I cant afford a tutor as I am a single parent and only have a limited income.
Is there anyone who can help or suggest areas I can go to for help?
I dont want my son to fail becasue the shcool cant help him.....

As a teacher I know this is a very common problem in Australian schools. This is due to the Educational Left's ( The Educational Left in the Universities, the AEU and the Socialist Left in the ALP) policy of automatic promotion - ie everybody gets a pass even if they cannot read or write to the required level and then the problem is handballed up the line. The only thing I can suggest is to see your local State MP and / or contact Legal Aid to see if the Department can be sued for neglect of their common law duties.

He is only in grade5.. Surely if your resources dont permit a tutour, you can help him out rather then his younger sibling. I agree the school should help out, however if it doesnt, why dont you step in, take some responsibility and help him out 1 hour a day.. P.S. moving schoold mid year does stuff up kids educational pattterns.. especially if they arent that great to begin with..
Excuse me, but I do help him out the reason his sister is better off helping him is I learnt a different way than wat is bein taught at school. An if I was to teach him my way then he would be marked wrong for not doin it the right way!!!!
I am a single mother and work in child care which if you didnt know is not a 9-5 job. My shift ranges from 6am starts to 6 pm finishes. Then when I get home I cook clean wash iron fold bath the kids and some where amongst that I do manage to put my feet up an rest.
As for the moving situation. Dont throw stones if u have no idea of the reasons. The school he was in was not that great. An it was that school who was suppose to set up the learing support program, but the didnt, the school he now attends is better equiped to deal with him but like I said they dont offer it after grade 4.
So Tesaro i find your comment rather mean and not very nice at all. Know all your facts before u make comments...
Have you taken my advice? Marcus L'Estrange
No today was a busy day and did not have the chance to make phone calls. Tomorrow is the day i will make inquiries
Excuse me, what do you think the other parents do.. stay home and watch tv all day.. maybe go to the beach all day? You are lucky you have a 9-5 job.. my industry starts worktime starts at 8:30 latest, and finishes at 6..7.. 8 pm, so i have a nannie organised for afternoons. You dont need to just teach him your way.. you need to find out what they are learning now, and how they are learning, and teach that.. he is your son, and your responsible for him. Kids need to get a good grip on what is taught at schools, as thats the foundation for the rest of their life. Teachers will teach what they are told by the department, but at the end of the day, you are responsible for your childs life.. and (hopefully) this should be something you are happy to do to give him a great start.

Sorry if i sound mean and not very nice, however everybody has difficult situations.. some much more then others.. if every one just sits back and says life is to hard, its the schools responsibility for my kids future, then that poor kid will end up with not a bright future.

I know other single parents, with a few kids, one of them disabled, whose kids are doing remarkable well, in an area that is not renowned for good schools, because she invests heaps of time into her kids future after school. I know other families, who have severe medical conditions in one of the parents, yet their kids are also doing very well because of after school teachings.

My point is its your kids future on the line.. you may have it hard, but there are hundreds of parents that have it tougher.. dont think for one minute most families have a rosie time in todays society.. its tough for most. This should be a incentive to give your kids a better start so that they can get a foundation to a prosperouse future, and not point the buck at someone else.
I understand your point Tesaro, and agree that we as parents are ultimately responsible for our kids, HOWEVER...we are not trained professional educators, and as such must leave this aspect to our schools to a certain degree. I feel for you Kath. I hope you are able to take up Marcus' advice.
Sorry, were you referring to me? and who is Marcus, what advise should I be taking?
There are some schools who have an SEU unit for all grades who need the support. Its always best to find those schools if your child needs extra support. I did that with my son and he has improved alot by choosing the right school. I think all schools should have it, children deserve so much more!
Belinda, could you by any chance suggest the site where I can find a school's rating and such a school with SEU unit? I have had so many tries on the web to search for school reviews but the only thing I find is general information, it is very frustrating, I am thinking of taking my little one into a different school next term, I am very confused as to what is the right thing to do, I have studied in Europe and have no idea about Australian education... Email me if you like: tashapresnyakova@mail.ru
There are no sites for this, i had to ring all the schools in my area to enquire about there seu unit in there school first. It takes time but worth it for my child.
He won't fail because the school can't help him, He will fail because the school wont help him. He will be pushed through until it no longer become a plase where he wants to be. And our school days are supposed to be the best days of our lives, Har Har Har.
And i am not making fun of you or your son, i do feel for your plight
