I agree. What support services and extra assistance programs do each of the schools have in place?
There is also not information as to wether students with disabilities were tested or what percentage there are in a school.
One of my daughters has never been tested.
I have 1 son with ADHD. I sign an exception from testing for him.
I have 1 son with II and he also is VI. Last year he sat a mock test, he failed. So I signed another exception for him.
Why should these children sit an exam where they will fail? Why put these children through this stress when they have enough just coping with school?
Ask your school to do an exception!
get the school to get behavior support form the education department and they can ask for a sso worker to be with your son and you can also suggest that since he can only concentrate for a certain time then let him do work for 10 min with timer on and have a break in between that is where the sso worker can come in handy hope this helps and good luck to you and your family
Hi Shirley,
I have a 17 year old son with Aspergers Syndrome. He is failing year 11 because aspects of his condition are an obstacle when it comes to exams. In victoria when sitting year 12 exams all they offer is that he can have a 5 minute break and sit his exams in a seperate room. Mind you this is equal to what they can do for someone suffering a sore back. This doesnt help him with essays and understanding what test questions are asking him. His knowledge is A+ but he cant express it in a written exam. He is taking time off school because of the stress of sitting mid year exams and realising he is failing. His school has done nothing to try and get him grades he deserves without having to sit exams. The system fails our children. The governement should take the advice that specialists offer. The government is lazy and the education system is lazy. Yet its our kids that suffer.
he would also be eligible for an oracle, if a cognitive report showed this as a problem area.
thats not the right word, i think i meant a scribe. duh.
I have twins with ADHD who are now in year 7. I have had the same trouble with the school system in QLD. I have been fighting with the school since they repeated yr 1 to have extra help for them and all I was told, was that ADHD is not excepted as a disabilty in school system therefore they can't get funding for extra help. They have been tested by the guidance officer at least 3 times, and have failed. They fail every nap plan test, and all it does for them is take away any confidence they may have. They come home from school depressed, crying and calling themselves DUMB! It breaks my heart. They are not dumb, they just can't take the thoughts and ideas that are in their heads and retell it in writing, but if you ask them they can tell you word for word what has been said or taught to them. There has to be a better system for children like these, because the schools are failing them, not the other way around. I'm so scared for them as next year they start High School!
My grandson was tested in primary but not in High school
I agree, I have just checked the school that my daughter (who has autism) will be starting at next term, and their results were not the greatest, but I know for a fact that they are very good with special needs children.
i have autism. don know how they tested us. but i did ok i think. i just left school. was at kensington special centre.
Hi Ben. My daughter (Miki) attends Kensington Centre too :-) Good luck to you for the future!
