Event Description

Kingswood College in association with the Christian Research Association and the Uniting Church, Synod of Victoria and Tasmania present the 2010 Australian Conference for educators of today and tomorrow: Educating for a Purposeful Life.

The conference has four aims:

•To explore the psychology of positive wellbeing, spirituality and purpose.
•To examine contemporary youth culture and its relationship to sense of purpose.
•To provide workshops on existing and potential curriculum frameworks.
•To equip educators with the means to assist young people to find purpose in life.

Thursday 5th August 2010
Speakers include:

Dr June de Vaus – psychologist and author. June is currently writing a book on positive psychology.
Dr Helen McGrath – senior lecturer in education at Deakin University, who has written widely on ways to promote student wellbeing.
Dr Graham Rossiter – professor of religious education at Australian Catholic University who has explored the development of meaning and purpose in life.
Fr Chris Middleton – principal of St Aloysius College, NSW who will speak about the impact of school retreat on today’s teenagers.
Rev Dr Philip Hughes – chair of Kingswood College and senior reseach officer of the Christian Research Association. Philip will discuss what schools can do to develop the sense of purpose in lives of their students’.


Friday 6th August 2010
Speakers include:

Di Fleming – past principal and consultant on developing student passions and interests.
Dr Tim Sprod – teacher who has developed a curriculum on philosophy for students.
Dr Peter Kaldor – author of books on leadership and wellbeing. He is developing leadership curricula which will encourage students to make the world a better place.
Peter Cooper – director of Burke Hall, Xavier College. Peter will discuss how to create a culture of passion which taps into the interests and skills of students.

Of the Public schools in the area, Newbridge Heights has an excellent reputation. Holsworthy has a very good Kindergarten program. Both Wattle Grove and Hammondville are very good schools too.
